…15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” …17And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18″I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. [Matthew 16: 15-18]
Our Heavenly Father built His Church not upon man, but upon the faith of Peter. But what was his faith? “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” To Peter the Father revealed that he should say, “Thou art the Son of the living God.” Therefore the building of the Church is upon this rock of confession; this faith is the foundation of the Church.

No man can confer salvation upon another, no man can forgive sins of another, no man has universal spiritual authority over another, except Christ who is the head of the Church. Had the Father built his Church on a man or person he would have utterly failed before he even started and the power of God would have been non-existent….reduced to a form of Godliness. Peter and Paul knew all to well where the power, miracles and strength came from concerning the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When men tried to highly esteem them as objects to be worshiped for miracles perceived by the Apostles hands [Acts 14:14-18] they immediately ripped their clothes and pointed them to Christ. Salvation is through faith in Christ alone.

Furthermore, the ministry of the New Testament is not bound to places and persons as the Levitical ministry, but it is dispersed throughout the whole world, and is there where God gives His gifts, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers; neither does this ministry avail on account of the authority of any person, but on account of the Word given by Christ.

If  faith in Christ is the foundation of the Church, then the indwelling presence of his Holy Spirit from heaven beginning with his outpouring  on the day of Pentecost sustains  the Church with power.  Men will claim themselves as the representative of Christ on the earth caring for the Church, but the person of the Holy Spirit who is from heaven  leads the believer into paths of righteousness..
