God said to the Nation of Israel; under the Old Testament agreement, “if you forsake me I will forsake you.” Under a better New Testament he made this part of his agreement with the believer in Christ; if one forsakes God he will pursue the one and through mercy and grace he will leave the 99 to find the one lost. If you have wandered off from God, he himself through Christ and his Holy Spirit will pursue you hoping that he can find you again.

Adding: God has not forgotten Israel

Matthew 18:12-14New International Version (NIV)

12 “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about the one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.” Jesus Christ
